Ottawa Photographer – Why Photography is Expensive

The day before a wedding, I was in the studio photographing a newborn and wanted to use my portrait lens to photograph a close up of the baby. It gave me an error code on my camera that I did not recognize, so I switched lenses and put that one aside to deal with it later.

Later came and I was not able to figure out why it was giving me the error, so I took it to Henry’s and was told the mechanism inside was malfunctioning and the lens needed to go back to Nikon for repair. This lens is not even 2 years old and is very expensive as it is a pro lens.

When a lens goes for repair, it is usually a 6 to 8 week wait period, so by then my wedding season would be over. I use this lens for a big part of my bride and groom photos on a wedding day, so I rushed downtown to the other Henry’s store to pick up another lens.

The cost of the lens with taxes was $2090.50. Ouch! I had tears in my eyes. That’s a big chunk of change. Lenses to me are a necessity. I could have shot my weddings with my Zoom lens, however the images are much nicer with this lens. The images are crisp, the colors are vibrant and it is a lot less work for me to photoshop due to the quality of the lens. A client might not notice the difference but I do and quality images are important to me.

When you purchase photography services and prints, you are not only paying for the day or a piece of paper. You are also paying for products you do not see such as equipment, software, insurance etc. You are paying for quality, experience and knowledge.

You might find a photographer to do your wedding who will charge $1000 but that’s a big price to pay to be disappointed with the final product.

Why risk your special day?
